The Environmental Governor

New York's Gov. George Pataki picks a week when gas prices have reached yet another all-time high to announce speed limits are going up around the state:

Governor George E. Pataki today announced that speed limits on 134 miles of eligible State highway across New York will be increased to 65 miles per hour (mph) – the first designations since legislation was enacted last year that gave authorization to the State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) and the State Thruway Authority to administratively increase speed limits to 65 mph. The law, which was signed by the Governor in September 2003, took effect on in March.

The regions where the higher limits are in place do not include Long Island, where driving slower than 65 means taking your life in your hands.
