Legendary New York City D.J. Scott Muni passed away last night, reported a few minutes ago by on air personality Maria Melitto at Q-104.3. Muni suffered a major stroke last year and hasn't been able to do his show live--but Q-104 played old shows, old clips and had guest DJ's do his show from noon to one pm everyday. Muni worked for WABC 770 during the sixties, met the Beatles at the airports, and later, while a DJ at rock legend WNEW FM 102.7 in NYC, developed a friendship with John Lennon--whom he met in the hospital when both became fathers again....Tune to Q-104 for a continuing memorial planned for the rest of the week....by rob jeantet Posted by: rob jeantet at September 29, 2004 11:44 AMThis news has saddened me to the point that I am sitting here at my desk at work and crying. I grew up with Scott - always listening to him - and he was always there. He will be sorely missed. He always knew how to put the correct spin on some issue to make me feel better about what was happening. What a wonderful man! Condolescences to his family and to his colleagues. He's now upstairs with John and George. I can remember Scott from way back in the late 50s when he was on WMCA - in those days I listened to my "transistor" under my pillow!! Then, of course, there were the glory days of WNEW-FM; Scott was there, too, paving the way for a new format which unfortunately really no longer exists. Scott, I'll never forget how you got us through the night on that terrible day when John Lennon was taken from us. You talked to us on the phone, played music, shared your memories, and tried to give us hope when there seemed to be none. Your voice on the radio will be missed but not forgotten. Godspeed, Scottso, and say hi to John, George, and the "Night Bird" for me. This ia a reminder that we are all getting older. I think one of the worst parts of the next few days is that the tributes won't take place on 102.7, but on other stations, as the station he helped to make a legend is no longer around either. Posted by: Rick at September 29, 2004 11:12 PMA major part of our teen years. 1970-1978. Scott Muni was the greatest rock-n-roll DJ that ever lived. When FM radio exploded in the 70's, he was THE voice of rock-n-roll. It's like he was the narrator for some of the best years of my life. Had not heard him in many years, but his influence was still felt all these years later. Condolences to his family and friends. We just lost a legend. Posted by: Sean at September 30, 2004 08:48 AMThe staff of 91.9 FM is saddened by the passing of Scott Muni. Many of the DJ's grew up listening to the legends of WNEW. I listened to Mr. Muni on WNEW back in the late 60's early 70's. In those formative years, I thought/knew that what Mr. Muni said was cool/happening in music WAS cool and happening. I still have a taped (on reel-to-reel) segment from Mr. Muni when he did a spot on WNEW called "Happening Singles." His voice and his demeanor will be missed! Posted by: Claus at September 30, 2004 08:57 AMI met Scott Muni when I was a young teenager. He and I were members of St Paul's on the Green in Norwalk. He was "always" kind and generous. He opened his heart and home to the YPF (young peoples fellowship) on many occasions. We loved him and will miss him. Stuck out here in the left coast's radio wasteland, I look back on the best years of my life spent in NYC and new-fm. The soundtrack of those years for me was voiced over by the Professor. Rest in Peace, Scottso. Posted by: Mike Senyo at September 30, 2004 11:54 AMScott Muni was the essence of NY radio in the late 60's and early seventies. Together, with the rest of the WNEW family of jocks, Scott raised the bar for the rest of the stations to emulate. Sorry that type of radio format is gone forever, and left with talk radio. Cat was holding a half dozen people hostage at a NYC Bank with a gun. A WNEW-FM reporter tried to interview Cat live on site, Cat said "Your from WNEW, play some Dead, Dylan & Stones!" It was mid afternoon and Scott Muni came on the air saying "One of our listeners is in trouble & needs our help so I'm going to play what he has requested to keep him calm. Sure enough for what now seems like it was the rest of the day Scott played Dead, Dylan & Stones, (it was great!) Scott even managed to call Cat while on the air to keep him calm & talk with him. He later was able to reach Cats girlfriend, who of course was named Mouse & this also helped the situation. Scott then went down to the bank to speak to Cat in person trying to negotiate with him & talk him into letting the hostages go. Later that evening Cat did let several hostages go for some 6 packs of beer, he finally fell asleep, was taken away & no-one was hurt. There was an article in the paper the following day but it didn't give any credit to Scott Muni. This is just one example of what a big heart he had. He really cared about his listeners, kept us informed & turned us all on to some really great music & bands. Thanks for the memories Scott & we'll all see you again someday. Posted by: Carl Tagliabue at October 27, 2004 07:14 PMI left New York for Florida in the late 80's and often wished to hear someone like Scott. It was so when we went back home we would ask the cab driver to turn to 102.7 F.M. Just to hear Scott or Dave Herman. That was the joke when we got back would be 'Dave Herman, play us some Rock and Roll'. I just heard today about Scott and I am overwhelmed. Sweet dreams Scott....
